This assignment was difficult for me. My thesis statement isn’t strong. It needs some work, and with advice I think it could turn out good. Research has been tough, because both the movie and the book are old. The book was written in 1915. There has been several plays over the book and even a film made in 1938. It seems for my final draft I have going to have to dig deeper into google and hunt for some articles.
I feel like my organization of the essay is good so far. I need to add a lot more to the body of it. I pretty much stayed with my outline, I didn’t switch it up much. The only thing I really need to do is add more to it. I could make my conclusion a little bit longer and more interesting.
I would give advice to future students to pick something that easier to compare than what i picked. It would make their research a lot easier. I would also tell them to try to pick something they have watched before or read before. I would also tell them to dig deep in their research. Don’t use the first thing they read online, or use the first article they see. I think most of the students will like this assignment overall. It is just really easy to struggle with the research and the organization of what you want to do or say. I would tell them not to get frustrated with it.
I haven’t met the requirements yet. I haven’t met how many words need to be used. I also have intergrated any quotes or articles into the essay. I have a lot of work to do, mainly because I am struggling with the research a little bit. I also need to finish the bibliography. So, I have a lot of work to do.
For this assignment I chose the film She’s All That. I didn’t know however that it was based on a book. The book is called Pygmalion. Fancy name right? The reason I chose She’s all that is because, I have seen the film before. It is a Romantic Comedy. I didn’t know it was about a book, which makes it more interesting. The book was written in 1912 by George Bernard Shaw.
The film She’s All That was released in 1999. A long time from 1912. So the film modernizes the story of the book, to our time. The two time periods are complete opposites from one another. In 1912 if you were rich or from a upper class family, you don’t date or talk to a boy or girl who is of lower class. In the 1990s, it was different. People of different class went to school together, hung out together, and date on another. The thing in the 1990s is sports were big in school. The Athletes dated cheerleaders or athletes of the opposite sex. Sport stars didn’t date artist or drama people. They were considered “losers”. In the original text, a man from upper class bet his friend he could turn a poor flower girl into a duchess at a party. By teaching her proper words and gentility. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pygmalion_%28play%29
In the film. Two jocks make a bet that they could turn a loser girl into prom queen. The main guy Freddie Prince Junior teaches the girl how to be cool, and takes her to parties with the in crowd. She isn’t to well accepted at first. She learns how to stand up for herself, and how to talk to people much better than she had in the past.
Both the book and the film sound opposite from one another. But they both resemble the same story line. Take someone of lower class or lower self esteem and making them someone special. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0160862/
Overall, I think my essay for my Episode of Once Upon A time was a 6 out of 10. I did close read the episode, but I think I could do better. I think I didn’t do so well, because it was my first time doing something like that. I feel like I explained the Episode in great detail, but I didn’t give enough of the feeling of the episode. I would change how I explained the theme more of the episode. It was difficult to explain the feeling for me. The reason why is because, the episode had many different feelings for me. It was hard for me to put into words. It was easy for me to explain the episode in detail though, because I really payed attention to the story line. In the future I would tell people that they should take every little note they possibly could over the episode they chose. I would also tell them to choose an episode that seems exciting. It may be easier for them to write about an exciting episode, than a boring one. My episode was a little boring and slow moving, it was hard sometimes to stay focused on the details of the episode. I overall like the episode, so I think the essay turned out alright. I didn’t have the chance to make an outline. So I am hoping that my essay was good enough to meet the requirements I needed to. This assignment did help me discover new knowledge. It showed me how stories of the past evolve through time. I never noticed it before, but now I pay attention of the dialogue of older movies compared to the remakes. I also pay attention to how movies feel and the theme of them, just to see if they are sending a message.
For the Once Upon A time assignment we had to do, I chose episode 5. I chose this one really for no one reason except that I read what the episode was about. When it said it was about Jiminy Cricket It attracted, because I don’t know much about him. I never really read or saw anyting about Jiminy Cricket growing up. So this episode interested me.
Episode 5 alluded to Jiminy Cricket. Through out the episode it shows how Jiminy Cricket came to be. He was just a man who was in some sort of show with his parents. Jiminy wanted to leave the family business though. The main reason is because, his parents were thieves and stole off of everyone they could. Jiminy however didn’t like to be that kind of person. He would try to convince his parents to let him leave but they wouldn’t let him. Jiminy tried to poison them, but it backed fired and he ended up turning a little boys parents into to dolls. So, after that jiminy wished upon a star. A fairy or something came down from the skies and granted him a wish to turn into cricket. By doing this, he promised to help the boy he had hurt, by guiding him through obstacles.
In this episode it was kind of slow moving. There really wasn’t that much action in it because, it was telling a story. It was kind of suspenseful because you didn’t know what was going to happen to Jiminy Cricket. It had modern language in it, no Old English or Fairy Tale type of language you usually see in show or movies like that. It had a sad tone to it where Jiminy Cricket was wanting to leave his family, but couldn’t. It was a good episode, that covered a lot of background into Jiminy Crickets life.
My name is Brandon Carder. I graduated from Carlisle High School in 2011. I know live in Middletown. http://www.carlisleindians.org/. I played baseball in high school and a little bit of football. I am a huge sports fan. I love my Cincinnati Reds, Denver Broncos and Ohio State Buckeyes. This is my Third semester here at Miami Middletown. I really like it here, most of the professors are very helpful and nice. I like to play video games, just like everyone now days. I also somewhat like to work on cars even know they mostly aggravate me. I still try though and know more about cars than most people. http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=cin. I am about to get married to my wonderful Girlfriend Dakota. We also have the greatest dog in the world, Gunner.
The reason I am here is to get better at English. I am not great at English or anything, but I do tend to like it. I am new to this who WordPress thing. As of now though, it seems pretty cool. I am at Miami to get my Degree in Criminal Justice. Miami has a wonderful Criminal Justice program with lots of great teacher. I feel like polishing my English ( writing/typing) skills will help me in the future. Not just for being a police officer or detective, but if I feel like continuing my education even further. I have heard though that police departments do like applicants who can write.
Hopefully after I get my degree I will be going to the Police Academy. I am not really sure which one I will be going yet, I haven’t had the chance to look into it very much. It is not that I am not worried about it, but I still haven’t decided if I want to become a big city police officer or a town like Middletown or smaller. I hope that it will all work out in the end. I’am going to work real hard to get where I want to be. I have visited the Middletown Police Department and talked to several officers. In doing that, it makes me want to be a police officer more.
